A startup, Challenergy Inc., Sells Micro Wind Turbines for Power and Communication in Emergencies
Challengergy, located in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, is a startup focused on wind power development. It plans to offer propeller-less micro wind turbines designed for power generation and communication, particularly in disaster scenarios. By 2025, these devices will be available nationwide through sales channels like major gas distributors. The government aims to boost the installation of wind turbines because they can produce electricity in locations where the power grid has been disrupted by disasters, while also promoting the adoption of renewable energy.
The micro wind turbine produces 100 watts and works by generating electricity with solar panels and charging storage batteries. Typically, it is used for street lighting; however, during emergencies like disasters, it can function as a hub for charging and communication. This system was tested at the Astomos Energy hub, a leading distributor of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and an investor in Challenger Energy, at the end of August. The goal is to sell it for under 5 million yen, including installation costs.
Challenergy is creating a propeller-free vertical wind turbine. This innovative design allows electricity generation from any wind direction and continues to operate effectively even in extreme winds like typhoons. Additionally, the vertical orientation makes them quieter, allows for better visibility of birds, and reduces the likelihood of accidents such as "bird strikes."
To replace diesel generators in disaster situations, there is anticipated demand in remote islands and parks where installing large wind turbines is challenging. The company plans to sell 100 units annually by utilizing the sales network of Astomos' authorized dealers to connect with companies and local governments.
Suitable sites for extensive renewable energy development, like solar power, are limited. Challenergy plans to commercialize large 100-kilowatt Magnus wind turbines.
