KDDI and NEC Launch Strategic Cybersecurity Partnership with Global Ambitions

KDDI and NEC are establishing a strategic cybersecurity alliance and aiming to launch operations within the year. The partnership will deliver advanced cyber defense services to the public and private sectors, with a focus on critical infrastructure such as utilities, transportation, and finance.

The move reflects the rising demand for robust cybersecurity amid geopolitical tensions, including the Ukraine conflict and concerns over Taiwan. The companies will also support Japan’s national security strategy and economic resilience.

Leveraging KDDI’s global network and NEC’s expertise in government and infrastructure systems, the venture aims to safeguard corporate supply chains both in Japan and abroad. The partners are also exploring the establishment of a 24/7 international operations center to monitor threats and respond in real time.

Artificial intelligence will play a key role by enabling automated threat analysis, conducting vulnerability assessments, and streamlining response efforts. These services will focus on major organizations and government agencies, guided by a vision of safeguarding Japan’s digital infrastructure under the .JP domain.

The alliance comes amidst a surge in global cybersecurity investment, including Google’s $32 billion acquisition of Wiz and Cisco’s $28 billion deal for Splunk. While NTT remains a dominant player in Japan, the KDDI–NEC partnership introduces a strong alternative with international capabilities.

The initiative aligns with Japan’s proposed legislation on active cyber defense, which may allow authorities to preemptively neutralize cyber threats. KDDI and NEC plan to support corporate compliance and collaborate closely with national efforts to enhance cyber resilience.

By merging their strengths, KDDI and NEC intend to establish themselves as a leading force in Japan’s cybersecurity sector and a competitive player on the global stage.
