Toyota has Presented a Prototype of its Hydrogen Engine

Toyota Motor is moving closer to bringing hydrogen-powered vehicles to market. To broaden the project's scope, they have developed a hybrid vehicle (HV) that combines hydrogen fuel with an electric motor. Additionally, they are exploring the option of liquefying hydrogen to enhance storage capacity. With a renewed focus on eco-friendly options beyond electric vehicles (EV), the government is eager to expedite the commercialization of hydrogen-engine vehicles.

The hydrogen hybrid vehicle was launched on the 16th at the Fuji International Speedway in Oyama-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture. Vice President Hiroki Nakajima, serving as chief technical officer (CTO), stated, "We want to seriously explore liquid hydrogen as the next step." This initiative focuses on increasing the distance achievable on a single charge.

The hybrid vehicle, derived from the commercial model "Hiace," offers a range of around 250 kilometers, which is 25% greater than that of traditional engine vehicles. However, it still needs to catch up to the mileage provided by gasoline engine vehicles, which can reach about 700 kilometers.

When hydrogen is liquefied, its volume reduces to roughly 1/800 of its original, enhancing loading capacity. Conversely, a fuel tank with high insulation—similar to a thermos—is necessary. As the overall system grows, Hiroki Nakajima remarked, "The plan is to begin with the larger trucks."
