Anime Meets Traditional Crafts: DNP Brings Japanese Artisanship to Global Fans

Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) is launching a new initiative to introduce Japan's traditional crafts to overseas audiences by combining them with globally popular anime intellectual property (IP).

The first collection, released under DNP's new AN-IPPON brand, features three products inspired by the internationally acclaimed anime series NARUTO Shippuden. The lineup includes a handcrafted Akabeko (red cow) folk toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, Kutani ware ceramics decorated with scenes from the anime, and elegant Yonezawa-ori woven scarves.

The Akabeko, a traditional symbol of good fortune and resilience in Fukushima, has been reimagined with illustrations of Naruto Uzumaki and the legendary Tailed Beasts, creating a unique fusion of Japanese folk culture and contemporary pop culture.

Through the AN-IPPON project, DNP will oversee licensing negotiations, product planning and development, sales, and promotional activities. The products will be available at DNP's Tokyo Anime Center stores in the United States, where demand for Japanese anime merchandise continues to grow.

According to DNP, although the U.S. represents one of the world's largest markets for anime, awareness of Japan's traditional crafts remains relatively limited. By combining iconic anime IP with authentic regional craftsmanship, the company hopes to introduce Japanese cultural heritage to a broader international audience.

Building on the initial launch, DNP plans to release three additional NARUTO collaboration products during fiscal 2026, expanding the concept of connecting Japan's traditional craftsmanship with global anime culture.

This initiative reflects a growing trend in Japan of using internationally recognized pop culture as a gateway to promote regional industries and traditional craftsmanship. By blending centuries-old artisanal techniques with beloved anime characters, DNP aims to create new opportunities for Japanese crafts in overseas markets.
