The Most Common Reason for Working as a Non-Regular Employee Is "At a Convenient Time"

According to a detailed labor force survey released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 14th, the number of people who became non-regular staff or employees because of "I want to work when it's convenient for me" was 6.79 million on average in 2022. It was an increase of 220,000 from the previous year and the highest number since 2013, when statistics were available. The percentage by reason was 33.5%, up nine percentage points from 2013. More and more people value flexible work arrangements.

On the other hand, the number of those who became informal because of "There are no jobs for our regular staff and employees" was 2.1 million, down 60,000 from the previous year. Since 2013, the number of people has decreased by about 1.3 million. The percentage will also be 10.3% in 2022, down nine percentage points from 2013.

In 2022, more people took time off for personal or family reasons. Of the 2.19 million people out of work in 2022, 220,000, or 10% of the total, will be "work or business reasons." "personal or family reasons" accounted for more than 1.45 million or 60% of the total, of which 590,000 or 60,000 more than the previous year were "for childbirth/child care." The number of employees absent from work due to childbirth and childcare was the highest for men and women, at 30,000 and 560,000, respectively.
